Dim sum in Guangzhou is not quite the same as dim sum in Vancouver. For one thing, they don't serve it at lunch time. They serve it either in the morning, or late at night. We opted for the late night treatment, and so headed out at about 9:00 p.m. We went to a well known place on Beijing Lu, which is one of the main hubs in Guangzhou. The restaurant was about six storeys above ground level, and we got ourselves a window seat so we were able to see a long ways down. Kind of neat. I took a photo, you can see above. This may look a bit chaotic, but this is what an intersection usually looks like in China. People every which way. Only missing the cars. Imagine the picture but jam full of cars, as well as people, and you will have a good idea of what China traffic is like. Stay tuned for the China traffic blog entry.
Anyways, the other big difference was the size of the teacups! Extremely small. Apparently this is Chaozhou style. Chaozhou or Teochew or Chiu Chow (all are different ways of spelling the same thing) is an area in eastern Guangdong province, and many people are from that area. Fittingly, Karen hails from that area, so maybe that is why they gave us such small cups.
Anyways, the food was much the same as a Vancouver dim sum restaurant. The nor mai gai had a pastry on top of it, that was different and a little bit weird. Otherwise, the things are pretty much normal. You can see for yourself. The price was around 50 RMB per person, when we split it all out.
